「さびしい」の類語とその違い

Q: さびしい と さみしい はどう違いますか?
A: I think we Japanese often use "さびしい" when describing circumstances that make us feel lonely.
We generally write it as "寂しい" in Kanji just as written it like "寂寞" in Chinese.
例:「寂しい街並み」, 「寂しい雰囲気のお店」, などなど…。

On the flip side, we often read "寂しい" as "さみしい" when describing a person's feelings subjectively, especially in spoken language.
例1:「もうすぐ卒業だけど、なんだか少しさみしいね.」
例2:「親の仕事の都合で来週引っ越ししなくちゃいけないんだ。」「ケンカばかりしてたけど、それも残りわずかだと思うとさみしいね。」

I mean, it is safer to read "寂しい" as "さびしい", when using hiragana in formal speech or writing.
Whereas, I think reading it either way in daily conversation doesn't cause any problems in most cases.

BTW, we sometimes write it as "淋しい" with the same meaning.
This Kanji is not regular-use 漢字, but we sometimes see it in a novel, manga, and something like that.
The author dares to use it with a particular intention.
This kanji does not imply the causes or circumstances of loneliness but is only used to describe an individual's subjective feelings.
I'm not sure, but this may derive from an image like "我被泪淋湿了".
This is because there are a few metaphorical expressions to describe loneliness, as in "涙で枕を濡らす" or "涙雨.
This difference in converting each to different Kanji looks similar to the relationship between "見る" and "観る", I suppose.
Hope this helps! (*´ω`*)
