Q: My Japanese book says that you do not use上手 when referring to yourself (instead you use とくい). However it's example for "I am good at taking pictures" did use 上手 (しゃしんを撮るのが上手です).
Is it allowed?
A: I am not a native Japanese speaker, however I have been studying for 4 years now.. Wooho!, anyways back to your question, in my mind 上手 is more talking towards your skillset, when you say I am good @ cooking, In Japanese what your really saying is I am skilled at the task of cooking. Of course as this a bit too long, In English we just say I am good @ doing so and so.

とくいjust means, something your good @ or whatever your forte is.
aka your specialty. My forte is Maths,
My specialty is making Risotto Primervera, in this scenario your talking about a specific dish your good @ aka signature dish , it makes sense to use とくい in this scenario, u can still use 上手 butとくい just sounds better, and it doesnt matter whether your talking about yourself or another person.

An easy way to remember which is which

Things that usually refer to something physical in nature would be refered to as 上手, although not always the case

e.g. cooking, cleaning, playing the guitar, singing,

とくい= good @ maths, making people laugh, being able to imitate someone , things that refer to the mind

As for in regards to what your textbook says, this is true to a certain degree, I have heard 上手 being used more when commenting about someone or something vs とくい being used to describe onself, i am good @ so and so. however this is not a hard and fast rule.

u can say 日本語上手!but saying 日本語はとくいね!is also correct as they both have very similar meanings and many times can be used interchangeably, just one being used more common than the other. In the above sentence 上手 is more common however.

Fun Fact 上手- 上 means above, high, up手- is hand

hence upper hand = skillset (^.^)(^.^)

btw this is not the same word u would use in a resume , so be careful

I know its long, but I hope this helps you lol
