The sentence's not wrong; there are several differences between 下りる and 下る.

First, each corresponding word is different. (It's complicated, but the antonym are the same for both, のぼる.)
「A.あがる⇔おりる」「B.のぼる⇔くだる」
We could say that A is both an instant verb, while B is both a continuous verb.

That is, B is a continuation of the action, so when you say 山を下る, you haven't completely down the mountain. You're somewhere along the way.
On the other hand, A is an instant verb, so when you say 山を下りる, which implies that you're at least moving to the starting point or thereabouts.
The same would be true if we consider 山をあがる and 山をのぼる.
