Q:
I know it is customary for foreigners to use katakana in names, but I was wondering about the kanji-use in names for foreigners.
E.g. Emma -> 恵真 or エマ?
Sarah -> 沙蘭 or サラ?
Marie -> 真莉 or マリー?
I've heard it is considered rude/disrespectful in Japan for foreigners to use kanji for their names and that we should use katakana instead. How does this work exactly? What is your input on this? Thank you so much for your time🌼🌼🌼

A:
I don’t think it’s rude or disrespectful if foreigners use kanji for their names. I think it’s cute, and I’m sure many Japanese would feel the same way.
However, if you choose kanji that has the same sound as your name, it does look like the kind of thing the Japanese delinquent youth would do. Do you know what I’m talking about? Like 夜露死苦 for yoroshiku? Or those names Japanese young married couples choose for their babies. I know a baby named 修斗(pronounced shu-to, like shoot), the father likes soccer. The longer your name and the more kanji you use, the more it looks like it.
So, if your name is David and you choose phonetic equivalent kanji like 田伊美土, I would think it’s still cute but I wouldn’t recommend you to put it on your business card or anything. I would suggest you to use katakana for that kind of things.
So, overall, I guess what I’m saying is that if foreigners use kanji for their names, Japanese don’t take it offensive or anything but don’t take it seriously either. It’s just for fun, we would assume.
