Q: A Sisyphean Thing of Mine
The mythology of Sisyphean dates back to ancient Greek time. Sisyphus was said to be the most treacherous being in the Greek mythologies. He is infamous for playing tricks and entoiling others. Finally, his deceitfulness and betrayal gave great umbrage to the gods, Zeus punished him by forcing him to roll an immense boulder up a hill. When the boulder was about to reach the peak, it would roll its way down to the bottom, and he had to do it all over again, repeating this action for eternity. Nowadays people use the word “Sisyphean” to refer to tasks that are both laborious and futile through the classical influence on modern culture.
When it comes to me, I could say that those sorts of Sisyphean things I have done so far were too many to count. Such as making plans but always renounce it halfway, going to gymnastic but never stick to it over two months, buying a lot of books but could barely read one or two. Nevertheless, if someone mention the word “Sisyphean” to me recently, the first thing that pop into my mind must be the labor skills class. In class we are asked to weed some sections in the campus, most of them are patches of grass. I bet that those lawns have never been weeded since the campus was completed!!! All right. I admit I exaggerate it a little more. But such kind of things were totally typical “Sisyphean”. The lawn we weed are always some remote sections of the campus which no one except some strolling grannies is ever going to notice. What’s more, those bushes, for no one has been employed to prune them for a long time, have already been in a mess. You shall never know which are the original and which are weeds if not be told. They look exactly the same thing——a mess. What depress me most is that the work is in a endless cycle. If this week we weed section A, next week we shall start section B, and then we still have section C,D,E ,F,G in the following couple of weeks. When we finally finish the last section, the weeds in section A have already grow a lot, which means we have to do it all over again.
