A: diminish or put at rest (fear, suspicion, or worry).

A: I would say they're the same.
A: To be honest, I don't really know the meaning of half of these words, and probably most native speakers would say the same. I'll try to provide examples for the ones that I do know

Alleviate: This is usually used when referring to reducing the suffering of a person. It may be physical suffering, but it can also be emotional or mental suffering. Most often, this would be used as "to alleviate pain", but you could also say something like "to alleviate anxiety" or "to alleviate a burden (of a debt)" for example.

Mitigate: This is usually used when referring to reducing the effect of something negative, like something (a person or object) which causes physical damage or something (a problem or issue) which may be harmful to people or could affect the way certain systems work, both natural or man-made. For example, if you are familiar with game terminology, you could say "the defence stat mitigates the damage from an enemy's attack stat" (if this doesn't make sense to you, sorry! 😛). You could also say something like "to mitigate the effects of global warming" or "to mitigate the economic recession".

Appease: This is usually used when referring to stopping someone from being angry or aggressive. In general, it just means satisfying another person, usually by complying with their demands, in order to prevent a conflict between you and that person.

Mediate: This is usually used when referring to a person who tries to prevent or stop a conflict between two other people or two other groups.

Pacify: Very similar to "appease", but generally only refers to reducing anger

Placate: Pretty much the same as "pacify"

Quell: This generally means to stop something by using force or effort. Very often used in the same way as "pacify"
A: They are synonyms, they mean similar things. Mitigate and Alleviate (and sometimes ease) usually refer to physical pain.
“Use this medication to alleviate your symptoms”
“I got a massage to mitigate my back pain”
“The ice pack eased my headache”
“The therapist told me a story to allay my worry”
Most can be used interchangeably
A: Both mean to lessen. While they can be used interchangeably in some cases, the most obvious difference in use I can think of is:
to allay one's fears/doubts
to alleviate one's pain/suffering
A: I had to look this up
