Q:
brink と edge はどう違いますか?
A:
A brink is the edge of something high like the brink of a cliff or building.
Edge is the intersection of two planes like the edge of a knife or the edge of a roof. In case of a building the two planes are the roof and the wall.
In practice "brink" is the point beyond which you cannot go back. Ex. He is on the brink of the cliff. We are on the brink of disaster.
Edge is not so dangerous. Ex. The glass is near the edge of the table. I have to get home. My wife is on edge. I mean she is on the edge of being upset and being late could push her over the edge. (Being late again could be the reason the marriage is on the brink of disaster.)

A:
@VickaFlute It is used in the US, but not as common. I would say it’s used more in essays and documentaries than conversational speech. If you’re trying to convey the idea that something is about to change, just simply using the word “change” is enough.
Q:
I saw " on the brink of despondent" in a sentence. I looked the word "brink" upon the dictionary, I found the form "brink on something" on it. I guess something mean noun, but despondent is a kind of adjective, so I wonder "on the brink of despondent" is a mistake. Anyone can explain it to me ??
A:
On the brink means on the edge (like the edge of a cliff). I think it’s like 寸前.
There’s a mistake. It should be: on the brink of being despondent or on the brink of despondency. They either omitted the “being” or really meant “on the brink of despair” (which sounds more natural)
