Q: I've just finished Choi Eunyoung's '밝은밤' which my husbands recommended. I'm not sure if the word '밝은밤' could be translated as 'The bright night' into English. Maybe it's not correct at all.
The story is about four generations of women's relationships(great grandmother, grandmother, mother, daughter) for about 100 years. It's particularly more about struggling as a woman in a patriarchal society.
They comforted their's wounded heart each other. The hurt could be healed by other hurt, and there is something bright in the middle of pitch-darkness and a deep sadness as if the word '밝은밤'.
As a woman, I felt frustrated, exhausted, touched, and empathy for them more. This book made me question myself about being a woman and relationships constantly.

If Kindle had this book, I'd highly have recommended it to you.
Instead, I'd like to recommend 'Shoko's Smile' and 'Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982' to anyone who wants to know more about a woman's life in South Korea.
Maybe it's about women all over the world.

This is a beautifully written text. Yes South Korean women do suffer, but your conjecture at the end is also true. Women all over the world deal with these problems. Patriarchy is not necessarily bad. Women need the protection and support of men, but too often, it is patriarchy gone bad. Sexual harassment, workplace discrimination, domineering husbands, and the expectations of in-laws and society that are inordinately placed on women. I have read Kim Jiyoung 1982. The irony of the doctor who understands the problem in a clinical setting but fails to see or be empathic to the pain of his own wife. KJ 1982 also points out the way women reinforce the ideas of bad patriarchy, preferring sons, aborting daughters, etc. Yours very thought provoking piece of writing. I will find your suggested books.
