In Japanese mythology, there is a god named Sarutahiko, whose nose is very long. This god is said to be the model of Tengu. But we cannot clearly find the same root in both tengu and Sarutahiko. While the God of Sarutahiko becomes folkloric in a religon, in some regions in Ise in which a god of the sun leads, Ninigi (I don't know what NInigi is.) level down to the heaven, Tengu comes from China. Its root is the dog of the heaven as shooting fire balls, it represents the sonic boom of the shooting star, mountain religions, mikkyo, otogizoshi, etc. Various contents are added from many different materials and that creates the half God and half monster existence, Tengu.
