「Pharmacist」についての他の質問

Q: I work as a pharmacist at a dispensing pharmacy.

My main jobs are filling a prescription and explaining to a patient about the medication.

First, I check the prescription notebook and the prescription which the patient brings and confirm if there is no problem with the prescription. For example, I check whether it is OK to take the prescribed medication with the other medicines they take regularly together or if there are any drug-drug interactions between the prescribed medicines or if they are already taking the same kinds of medicines as the prescribed ones this time or whether it is appropriate about how to take or when to take the medicines that the doctor described on the prescription. If I find any problems, I will contact the doctor and ask about the prescription. After all the problems get solved, I start preparing the medicines. When the medicines get ready, other pharmacist double checks them.

And then, I explain to the patient about the medication. I also ask him/her if there weren't any side effects by taking the medication they got last time or if they could take the medicines regularly. Like that, I get some information from the conversations with them, and input that in the medication history.

Except for that kinds of things, I deliver medicines to the patient's home who cannot come to our pharmacy because of physical handicap or something. I also control the stock of medicines.

As for medicines, one mistake could lead to a life-threatening event, so I think that being a pharmacist is a very responsible job. It's crucial to learn about medications and diseases on a daily basis. I think that it's very important to give patients proper explanations of the medications and to notice the side effects they seem to develop and to find the mistakes or problems about the prescription so that they can avoid the dangers .

However, I feel most rewarding when patients tell me about their concerns or troubles and say " Thank you for listening to me. I feel refreshed." Psychological counselors are originally supposed to do such things though, I think that pharmacists can also reduce some burdens they have on their minds by listening to them. Some patients seem to hesitate to ask doctors about the medications or tell about their worries out of consideration for the doctors, but they can ask or share with pharmacists casually. Though pharmacists cannot prescribe medicines like doctors and we are barred from practicing medicine like doctors and nurses, we can listen to patients' voices. I definitely think that sometimes you feel better just talking to someone about your troubles. You don't necessarily need advice. There are times when you want to just be listened by someone, aren't there? So, I eager to listen to the patient who want to talk about their things if time permits.

But if I keep saying things like that, you might say, ”Why don’t you become a counselor or something?" so I also make sure to keep learning about medication.
