Sensibleの例文や意味・使い方に関するQ&A

「Sensible」を含む文の意味

Q: sensible
reasonable とはどういう意味ですか?
A: @elifimm : 'sensible' is an adjective that may refer to somebody who can make rational assessments and opinions based on experience and common sense; examples: 'it is a sensible choice to go to Istanbul by train instead of car', 'he is a sensible man', 'they are sensible about that problem', 'it is sensible for us to get ready a plan B should the main one prove impractical' ('for us' can be omitted if it is clear whom it's being talked about, of course). This meaning of 'sensible' is actually the same as 'reasonable': cf. below.
Another possible meaning of 'sensible' is 'practical' as in 'this is sensible clothing/equipment, not high fashion'.
Finally 'sensible' may also mean 'aware' as in 'everyone is aware that it is a serious hazard for old people not getting injected with a vaccine'.
'reasonable' is an adjective to which 'sensible' is a synonym as I wrote above. I'll give direct examples of 'reasonable' here because its meaning will be immediate and better explained than giving an introductory formal definition of it: 'that is a reasonable idea', 'it is reasonable to assume that the cost of living will be higher next year', 'it is reasonable for us to pay in advance part of the price so as to make this transaction quicker and easier', 'by law anybody is innocent until proved guilty beyond any reasonable doubt', 'the settlement with this short delay is still reasonable (as in 'acceptable') because the due amount of money is small', 'submitting this project proposal to that company department seems reasonable (as in 'appropriate') to me', 'the price of this high fashion garment is all but reasonable (as in 'fair'), 'this airline gives you a reasonable (as in 'average', 'good, in that it is not bad nor excellent') standard of quality'.
