Possession refers to something that you own, ie something that is yours, something that belongs to you. It can be a small item (eg a smartphone).
It does not usually refer to real estate, such as a house.
Examples:
• His car is his most prized possession. (=Of all the things he owns, his car is the most important to him.)
• He sold his most valuable possessions as he needed the cash.
(= He sold the things that belonged to him that were worth the most money)
The verb is “to possess”.
• He lives in a small cottage in the mountains and does not possess a TV or computer.
Property also refers to something that you own, but it is commonly used when talking about real estate, eg a house/building/land.
Examples:
• He lives in the UK but he has property in Spain.
• The property market in Shanghai is booming.
• We are saving up money to buy some property in the countryside.
However, it may depend on the sentence.
If you want to say something belongs to Mr Z, we would usually say “Property of Mr Z” (=belonging to Mr Z= Mr Z is the owner)
We would not say “Possession of Mr Z”.
The verb for property is usually “to own” (although you can also say “to possess”)
