Thank you everyone! This nuance is very useful for me to know!
To feipu: by "greetings" do you mean when I first meet someone, or when I see someone I already know?

To hanah:
It's used when you meet someone for the first time.
初めて means "For the first time".

I think both 始めまして and 初めまして are okay. Today 初めまして is used much more than 始めまして. But 始めまして is not incorrect.
始めまして is 始め(始める)+まし+て and means to begin a contact with you.
初めまして was incorrect in grammar. because a word 初めて (はじめて) is an adverb which doesn't conjugate. In concrete, There is not a word 初め which is read はじめ.
Note that a verb 初め(る) is read そめ(る), not はじめ(る). ex. 書き初め
初めまして began to be used in 20c, as a word at the first meet. It is understood as a single word which 初めて is changed. It has been used over 50 years, so I think 初めまして is also okay.

To hanah:
I just checked up about these words.
Both 初めまして and also 始めまして are good for the first time greeting according to several Japanese dictionaries.
There are the various views about "which is good?" in Japan.
If you are told any one "始めまして/初めまして is not good.", it's only one of the various views.
It depends on the person's habit.
So descriptions from maple and mfuji are correct.
Thank you very much for your question to make my opportunity to research!

I recommend to write はじめまして in hiragana. There is no trouble for it.
