I understand this sentence: הוא קשר את הכלב לעץ The dog was tied TO the tree. (לעץ)
But these I don't understand fully. ישבנו מתחת לעץ or התחבאתי מתחת לשולחן
Why is it still לעץ and not העץ or not השולחן ?
Also what is the difference between מתחת and just תחת?

@HebrewDane you should say
מתחת ל
when using prepositions of place
מתחת לעץ
under the tree
מתחת לשולחן
under the table
מתחת ל means under the
תחת
might have similar meaning but we usually use מתחת in this context
תחת
is also the slang word for behind, bottom
We usually use תחת talking about hierarchy and subordinates.
To describe where the book is, the best way would be
מתחת
