我れ唯だ足るを知る(ware tada taru wo shiru) は 英語 (アメリカ) で何と言いますか？

我唯足知 is the message carved in Tsukubai in Ryoan-Ji (Ji means temple) in Kyoto, Japan. I think this concept is really important in the context of SDGs and degrowth. So I want to be able to express this concept in English.

On this website, it is translated as “I only learn to be content”, or “I am content with what I am”. Do you have any other idea to express this concept in English?

Does 唯だ usually require the だ? Isn't the だ contained in the reading of 唯? Is this an old-fashioned way of writing the word? Same with 我 -- isn't the れ usually contained in the reading of 我?

我唯足るを知る

It looks kind of weird like that I guess ^

@vaer Yes, you can omit both 送り仮名.
I just referred the expression from this poster that I found in Ryoan-Ji. (And I failed to cite correctly, ❌我 ⭕吾)

吾唯足知 - To be happy with what one has. To be grateful for what one has. Having more than enough. To make the most out of the cards you've been dealt by life. Accepting one's circumstances in order to be able to move forward. Resignation. There are many ways to talk about this topic, but not an 1:1 translation. I was listening to "The Circle of Life" by Elton John recently and I think the theme fits this question, so give it a listen with lyrics on. :)
