I am often troubled which I should use "should" or "had better" in such as a sentence:
You should use が in such a sentence.
or
You had better use が in such a sentence.
You should use が in such a sentence.
or
You had better use が in such a sentence.

"Had better" sounds more urgent and official.
"Should" is more of a polite way to give advice

I think had better is more forceful. I don't really use it though. Hmm.. I did a bit of googling. This site seems to describe the difference quite well.http://www.englishgrammarsecrets.com/hadbetter/...

'Should' within this context, is giving encouragement and it implies that there will be a good outcome if you do as suggested.
'had better' is more of a warning or helpful suggestion and implies that if you don't do as asked, there will be a negative outcome.
You should have salad instead of fries for lunch (its better for your health)
You'd better have salad instead of fries for lunch (this person thinks you are looking a bit overweight)
You should attend the work party tonight! (it will be fun!)
You had better attend the work party tonight. (If you don't, the boss might get mad at you)
