either one could be used but B is makes more sense!

In normal conversation, A is more commonly used. Maybe an even shorter version: “Alex broke his leg while playing football”

Both are correct, but have a slightly different meaning. "Broke" is "simple past" and "had broken" is "present perfect." This explanation from Britannica is really good:

Use the simple past when the action started in the past, finished in the past, and is not continuing now. Use the present perfect when the action started in the past and is continuing now. The simple past tells us that an action happened at a certain time in the past, and is not continuing anymore. https://www.britannica.com/dictionary/eb/qa/Pre... [Great examples]

I broke the vase. [It's over and done.]

Mom came home and found that I had broken the vase. [I broke the vase in the past, but its effects continue forward.]
