I'm a highschooler, and I'm finishing this period in about a month and a half. I'd really want to study in a Japanese University, but I've done a research, and it is said that I'd have to take a entrance exam called EJU (Examination for Japanese Universities for foreigners), and I should master and comand Japanese in order to stjdy there... I still don't speak japanese... And this is a setbacks that drives me up the wall....
This summer I'll make an effort and try my best to learn japanese in about 3 months. Right now, I have just started to learn Hiragana, but I cannot practise that much because as I said before I need to finish my highschool.
Do you think I'll be able to master japanese in only a summer, and by the end of this year begin a degree in Japan? Or should I start a degree in my home country and then move to Japan when I comand the language, instead?
Thank you very much!

It depends on the Japanese level required. But my answer is no.
One of my friend passed JLPT N5 after 2 months studying side by side with his responsible full time job. But with N5 you can't even read children's books in Japanese.
Mastering a language is not something so easy, whatever it is.
I've heard many foreigners take entrance exams for universities after going to language school for a few years.

@catsland Yeah, that's true, mastering a language is tough. I'll try my best studying japanese. I believe that I'll need to take lessons in a language school. Q.Q

Have you thought of studying abroad through a University for Just Japanese?
A lot of progress can be done in language learning in 3 months, but Japanese is about as far away from English considering sound, writing, grammar, and anythng else you can think of. It will take a few years if you study really hard.
I recommend looking up famous polyglots on Youtube, they can give you good advice.

In the case of some Japanese company, it is no need to speak Japanese. For example, Rakuten and Fast Retailing.
If you can get high business skills in your home country, You may be move for working at Japanese company.
So, it is OK that you start a degree in your home country. But you should study hard.
Do your best!(`・ω・´)

What do you want to study in Japan?
I am a university student and there are many students from abroad in my university. They have at least N3 or N2 Japanese level, I think. So it's really hard for you to master Japanese for only 3 months.
There are several solutions to study in Japan, I come up with.
First, you study Japanese there or in Japan and pass EJU.
Second, you study at a university in Japan as an exchange student.
Third, there might be several university where you can take classes in English. For example, AIU, ICU ? I don't know well.
Good luck :)

No, in 3 months you won't master the language, please...
I've been studying for 3 years and I have a level that I am proud of; but I am still very, very far from being able to say that I master it, come on.
My advice to you if you are reeeeeeeeally serious and passionate about Japan is to start, in your country, a degree of Japanese : study Japanese in University. This way you will master the language much quicker than if (like me) you study by yourself, it will open doors to become an exchange student in a Japanese University, and eventually open doors to, *maybe*, live there, if you still do wish to do so.
Another advice is to look into the possibility of a working-holiday visa, look it up. Having a correct level of Japanese for these is better but not mandatory and it is much, much, easier to get one that getting into a Japanese University. But it is still quite a challenge so don't try it if you don't have at leaaaast a N4 level of Japanese or it will be a nightmare instead of being a wonderful experience.
Those are my advice to you. Good luck with learning this amazing language.

Look into the MEXT scholarship. It's a full-ride scholarship offered by the Japanese government (Ministry of Education/Monbukagakusgo). You can do your undergrad, post-grad, doctorate, or technical/vocational schooling in Japan. If your Japanese isn't up to it they will put you through a 6-month program at a Japanese language school before you start your degree program. Look up your nearest Japanese consulate/embassy's website. They'll have the info you need.

Just do some general googling/Youtubing on MEXT scholarships for more insights.

sorry to jump in but i got interested too.do you have to take that EJU exam in Japan?
also i dont know how it is in other countries but MEXT here only lets one person go per year so its pretty competitive program. you should have good grades to apply for it, if you want to go after finishing high school.
i have one year left till i finish and i also wanted to go studying to Japan.

I don't know for sure but unless you have JLPT N1 you'll probably have to take the EJU. It is a competitve scholarship from what I understand, but in the US there a quite a few spots. I think it might be a handful per consulate region. Also, MEXT scholarship applications open around April and close in June for the following school year starting in April; just something to keep in mind if you go for it.

Thank you guys! I'm really grateful to you, thank you very much for these advise, I'll analyze any kind of possibilities and eventually I'll make a decision. It is very difficult to learn and master a language in only a few months as you well said, but at least I'll give it a try.
