“Nothing to write home about” is an older expression .
People would write letters home (to their families) telling them interesting things ..
If he’s “nothing to write home about “ …that would means he’s not interesting enough to even mention in your letter to your family.
So you could say…
It’s entirely fair to say, he’s not that interesting…

@skamar I wanted to say he has little to no merit. I learned “nothing to write home about” from the dictionary. Don’t Americans use it?
- 英語 (アメリカ)
ok. personally I've never heard the expression before. it's probably rarely used

@skamar And I want to use the expression “It’s entirely fair to say”, so how would you put it to express the same thing?
- 英語 (アメリカ)
yes. you can say, "It's entirely fair to say that he has little to no merit."
which means, that you thought about the situation well and you feel that you have the right to say that he has little to no merit, given the person's background

@skamar Thank you, but the dictionary says “merit” is a formal term. That’s why I didn’t intend to use it from the beginning. Are there any other ways to word my original sentence?
- 英語 (アメリカ)
@handsomeish merit is not that formal. you can use it in regular conversation

@J_Dubuc Thank you for explaining to me the origin of that use. Can I also say, “It’s entirely fair to say he has so little to compliment”?

@handsomeish
No, that is not natural
….to say there isn’t much you could compliment him about.

I think "nothing to write home about" is fine. Maybe it's older but I'm older. 🙂
How about "nothing to get excited about"?

Yes, “nothing to write home about” is still used. In fact my daughter just said it the other day. People still write to people — it’s just via emails and other electronic ways rather than physical letters.

No I don't think "he has nothing to get excited about" is natural unless you're talking about what he has, not who he is.
A: What is he selling? Does he have anything good?
B: No, he has nothing to get excited about.
