In forming his own animation studio, Hearst hired several artists from the studio that had begun dividing and assembly-line production of animation the year before. They then hired artists from other studios and produced as many as eight short animated films in 1915, the year the studio was founded. All of these films were adaptations of comic strips that were popular in Hearst's newspapers. They were intended only as extras at the end of newsreels to entice viewers to buy his newspapers.
