Pacing is walking back and forth anxiously. This sentence is a metaphor that means I paced so much that I wore down the ground and made a hole. I think そわそわと行ったり来たり might describe pacing, but there might be a better phrase.

also, “ants in your pants” or “antsy” more so describes how a person is feeling, and saying “you’re practically wearing a hole in the ground” is describing the effect of the action pacing

in addition, the former doesn’t have a negative or positive connotation, but the latter is usually used when the pacing is annoying to watch

finally, the former is used when you’re feeling anxious and moving around a lot, but the latter is only used when you’re nerviously walking back and forth on the same spot
