当たって砕けようかな とはどういう意味ですか?

To give a bit more of context, a guy is talking about his type of girl, and then says that he doesn't know and then this. It is translated as it could work otherwise. But I don't really make sense of the expression and the words that are being used.

「当たって砕ける」means ”take a chance.” or ”go for broke.”

I think he is in love with someone and he want to ask her out, but he think that she may decline.
