いとこが嘘をついていることを聞いたら、どうしますか。 この表現は自然ですか？

It has been said to me いとこが嘘をつくことを聞いたら、どうしますか。is wrong and that I should use either いとこが嘘をつくということを聞いたら、どうしますか。or いとこが嘘をつくと聞いたら、どうしますか。instead. However in my book I also find sentences that use こと together with 聞く.

e.g.

私は中田さんがピアノをひいていることを聞きました。
I heard that Nakada-san is palying the piano.

So maybe こと is always preceded by a continuous form if used together with 聞く. What about the following?:

いとこが嘘をついていることを聞いたら、どうしますか。

It really uses the same structure as 私は中田さんがピアノをひいていることを聞きました。(the sentence in my book so it is supposed to be correct).

The intended meaning for all the sentences (いとこが嘘をつくということを聞いたら、どうしますか。/ いとこが嘘をつくと聞いたら、どうしますか。/ いとこが嘘をついていることを聞いたら、どうしますか。) would be:" what would you do if your heard (from someone else) that your cousin tells lies (on a regular base)?".
