It's ok! It is a bit confusing haha but you'll get it!
So I guess another way of explaining is MAJOR is something big and MAIN is something important or significant.
For example:
At school there is a major exam coming up. (So this sentence means that a big exam will happen soon. "Major" describes that the exam is a big deal).
The main part of the test is the essay. (This sentence means that the important part of the exam is the essay. So even though the whole exam is important, it's the essay that needs to be focused on. That's the MAIN point).

Major usually describes something big and important. Main is the focus of a certain subject.
For example: There is a major festival happening tomorrow and the pianist is the main act.
So it means that a big event is happening and the pianist is the central act.

They pretty much mean the same thing. It makes sense to say "I'm almost home" or "I'm nearly home."
You can also use it with time. For example "It's almost noon" or "it's nearly noon."
