The triangle headband is a part of a Japanese burial garment. A dead person is typically dressed in white kimono with some ornaments including the headband, which is called 天冠(tengan or tenkan). In some regions, they call it by other names such as 頭巾(zukin), 額烏帽子(hitai eboshi), or 髪隠し(kami kakushi).
The name is, however, not very Important, since most Japanese people don't know these official names. We just call it 幽霊の三角(yuurei no sankaku) in daily conversations.
There are various opinions about the meaning of the headband.
1. It is required for formal dress to meet Enma, the god of hell who judges whether the souls of people go to heaven or hell.
2. It is a talisman to protect the dead from the evils in hell.
3. It is a substitute for a crown representing the social rank of the dead. It doesn't necessarily represent his/her rank in the world. The bereaved family put it on the dead's forehead, hoping their loved one would be treated respectfully in the other world.
